Mission & VisionThe Hummingbird Conservation Networks (HCNs) is an expanded nonprofit organization built on the strong foundation of the Hummingbird Monitoring Network (HMN). While HMN focused primarily on science-based monitoring of hummingbird populations, HCNs broadens this approach to include community-based conservation, integrating people, data, and places for greater impact.
Our mission is simple but urgent: “Maintaining hummingbird diversity and abundance throughout the Americas.” |
To fulfill that mission, we strive to offer services, resources, and opportunities that empower communities across the hemisphere to actively participate in and benefit from hummingbird conservation efforts.
Our vision speaks to a future where:
“Hummingbirds survive, reproduce, and thrive—while human communities benefit economically, socially, and ecologically from their conservation activities.”
True success depends on the connections, relationships, and partnerships that build and sustain science- and community-based conservation networks. That’s why HCNs remains project-driven and is organized into four collaborative focus areas:

Our Four Networks
1. Hummingbird Monitoring Network (HMN)Understanding Change Through Data
Monitoring hummingbird populations helps us identify at-risk species, detect environmental impacts, and guide restoration and conservation policies. Our programs include:

Conservation with Community Impact
True conservation is not only about protecting habitats—it’s about engaging the people who live in and around them. Our programs support:
True conservation is not only about protecting habitats—it’s about engaging the people who live in and around them. Our programs support:
- Nectar Landscape Restoration: Developing nectar corridors and preserving native plants.
- Community Conservation: Empowering local communities to take part in habitat restoration and monitoring.
- Conservation Economies: Creating income-generating opportunities that support long-term conservation through local participation.
4. Hummingbird Conservation Learning Center (HCLC)
Connecting People Through Education

- STEAM Education: Offering curriculum-based programming for students and lifelong learners.
- Community Outreach: Hosting events and activities that bring hummingbird conservation to life.
- Digital Outreach: Spreading awareness through social media, websites, and digital libraries.
Why Hummingbirds?Hummingbirds are more than just pollinators—they are symbols of wonder, resilience, and ecological connectivity. They remind us of nature’s beauty and fragility. Across the Americas, we are building ecosystem-scale conservation networks that link hummingbirds with the human communities who care for them.
Through collaboration, data, and education, HCNs is committed to restoring vitality to our living systems, one wingbeat at a time. Let’s keep hummingbirds—and the ecosystems they rely on—thriving for generations to come. |
