Susan Wethington
Executive Director Susan began HMN with Barbara Carlson and George West soon after graduating with her Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Arizona. She has led HMN since its inception, envisioned HCNs, and now leads HCNs. HMN/HCNs is a second career; before HMN, she received an M.A. in Mathematics from the University of Arizona and then worked for IBM in their development laboratories. She was a programmer on both software and hardware development teams. |
Gaby Samaniego
Monitoring Coordinator Gaby loves birds—especially hummingbirds, of course! She comes from the Andes Mountains of Ecuador, where she studied Biology and worked on different projects investigating passerines and hummingbirds' ecology in Cajas National Park. In 2013 and 2014, she was an intern for HMN, and that is when her long relationship with the Sonoran Desert and Arizona commenced. While waiting to move to Tucson, she worked in Ecuador on educational and conservation projects with various organizations as she is interested in sharing her knowledge with others and inspiring people to protect our world. For her, coordinating a hummingbird monitoring program is the perfect opportunity to actively contribute to her favorite birds' conservation. When Gaby is not monitoring hummingbirds, she is birdwatching and gardening. |
Sergio Díaz Infante Maldonado
Research Coordinator Sergio loves being in the field, enjoying nature, plants, and birds in general, particularly hummingbirds. As a Mexican Biologist from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), he has studied the organization of mixed flocks of forest birds, mistletoe's reproductive biology and pollination, and hummingbird-plant interactions. In addition, he has collaborated on several hummingbird ecology studies in different parts of Mexico and has also worked in environmental education programs. Now, he's looking forward to contributing further to hummingbird knowledge and conservation. |
MARÍA DEL ROCÍO MENESES RAMÍREZ
Rocio has been an integral part of the Hummingbird Monitoring Network for many years, and we are sad to see her go. She has been a dedicated and passionate restoration coordinator, and her work has been invaluable to the organization. We wish her all the best in her new journey towards her PhD. We know that she will be successful in her studies and that she will continue to make a positive impact in the world. We are grateful for all of her hard work and dedication to the Hummingbird Monitoring Network, and we will miss her greatly. |
LEE ROGERS
"The Tool Guy" and Harshaw Creek Restoration Manager Lee was a retired IBM engineer. When HMN began, a source for well-made tools for hummingbird study was unavailable, so he decided to give it a try. During these last 15 years, he had designed, developed, and refined tools that are accurate to 0.07mm. It's a niche business, but now his tools are owned by researchers around the world. |
